- Remember the days when companies actually cared about customer service?
I barely do, and I’m no spring chicken. This is truly a sad affair. Most people in and of themselves, are upstanding and want to do a good job. I beginning to think that that is part of what frustrates most workers today. They want to do a good job, but are prevented from doing so by “the powers that be”. People are given difficult if not impossible timetables to perform their jobs. This leads to frustration, then poor job performance, then you become apathetic or quit and try to find a better place to work. And on the merry-go-round we go.
The fault for most employee and customer frustration belongs on the shoulder of people who are making decisions for the bottom line, when focusing only on the money. Whether that is a manager, CEO, or a Board of Directors; they are responsible. Through some perverted sense of self-preservation, they are causing problems in their own businesses and companies that cost them customers and money.
What brought on the rant…I was trying to complain online about a delivery at my house. I was sent on some convoluted page wanting to know if the package was lost or damaged. This is so they can ship the problem to their insurance department or company. That way they do not have to actually hear about the real problem.
So, since they won’t make it easy to report issues with deliveries, I guess it will have to be an old fashioned letter.
All of the good long time drivers are quitting because they are not being treated well. So, they end up hiring cheap new drivers who are poorly trained or don’t give a crap because they are on the “get job - get treated like crap - quit - get new job” hamster wheel. I once, about twenty years ago, asked a UPS driver who regularly came to the business I worked at “should I put ‘FRAGILE’ on the packages?” He just kind of shook his head and said it would be better if I didn’t. I really appreciated that honesty.
I have had issues with both UPS and FEDEX. And USPS doesn’t get a total pass because some of the packages don’t arrive always looking like they have been “handled with care“.
When you deal with real people, you can work things out and make it better. Let's bring humanity - people - back into business.
Here’s to all the real people out there!
