  • The Story of The UFO Contactee Who Went Public In Church.

About 20 years ago my wife and I had a UFO sighting while driving to our babysitters house late one night after work. We live and worked in a rural community near Buffalo Mo. That night we were driving along a country highway with no other traffic in sight. As I drove my wife spotted a bright light up in the sky immediately ahead of us. At first I thought It was a plane, but as the light drew nearer I noticed it did not move like an airplane and it was silent. It began to descend and move closer and closer to our car. Whimsically the thought popped into my head, "Welcome to Earth." Then the craft came very low and passed directly over our car. While this was happening my wife was yelling at me to pull over, but I could not find a safe spot to stop the car as I was having trouble seeing the road due to the bright light coming off of the craft. Suddenly the craft flew away from us and regained altitude. That's when I was able to safely pull over and stop the car. As we looked on the craft shot off out of sight. We stayed there for a while looking up at the sky and wondering what had just passed within 20 feet of us without making a sound. Finally, after having lost about a half hour looking at the sky, we got back on the road to pick our daughter up from the babysitter.

When we got to the babysitters house she mentioned that we had run a little late. I apologized and told her about the sighting we had had. That's when she told us about something very odd that had happened at her Baptist Church. Seems we were not the only people seeing UFOs.

She told us about a man - lets call him Bob - who was a regular member of her conservative Baptist Church. He was a Sunday School teacher who had some standing in the church. He was respected, and people looked up to him. Then (according to our babysitter) he "flipped." He claimed to have been contacted by aliens who began teaching him basic cosmology. The aliens told him that the Earth was not created in 6 days and that the Universe was far older than 6,000 years (as was his previous belief). They went on to teach him about the size of the visable Universe and taught him that the Universe was billions of years old. I do not know the full extent of the teachings they gave to him, but it sounded like stuff you would hear on an episode of Cosmos. Bob became an eager student. Then, he took things one step further, and began sharing his "new revelation" in his Sunday School Class, explaining there was no literal 6 days of creation and that The Universe was billions of years old. He also went on to explain to his Sunday School students that the Earth was far more ancient than they thought, and he emphasized that he had been told this by highly advanced space aliens. It caused one hell of a stir in that church.

My wife and I went over to that church a few days later to see for ourselves what the community was going through. It was an evening service we attended and the Pastor gave a 1 hour sermon addressing all the revelations Bob had made, and tried his best to refute them all. Ultimately he just said that he stood by his interpretation of the Bible, and that Bob was being relieved of his duties within the church. Bob was no longer considered a member in good standing, and he was never going to teach Sunday School again. In fact, Bob was later shunned by his old church community, and he lost a lot of friends there. That is the sad part of this whole story.

The good news here is that by going public, Bob did manage to open a few minds. Our babysitter went from thinking he was a nut to believing that there was something to his story. I shared his story in a Sunday School Class I used to teach at my own church, and recieved mixed reviews. Our church at the time was far more liberal than Bob's was, although we had our share of conservatives too. I shared Bob's tale as a "what if?" kind of presentation rather than as reporting it as facts that I accepted absolutely. I was surprised when one of our more conservative pillars of the community told me, "You know, there may be something to this whole UFO thing, but I'd be damned if I'd mention it in church!" So, although Bob and later myself did hit some push back in our respective church communities for telling the story ( he far more than I) we did help to get people to at least think about the possibility of alien life and the need to rethink our world view in light of new evidence and new discoveries.

In hindsight I think that mentioning UFOs, and Aliens in a normal Sunday School setting is probably not the best way to go about opening people's eyes. There are some who can be awakened, and I prefer to work with those people more privately whenever possible. And, there are others who will fight tooth and nail to maintain their old perspectives no matter what. The Baptist preacher in Bob's old church is a nice example of that kind of person. But, there are some people we can reach...if we are willing to step out, take a risk, and share our own experiences and views. We will find ourselves accepted by some and rejected by others...but at least they don't burn people at the stake anymore!

  • Greetings. I started this group in order to discuss how discoveries in space exploration and the possibility of #UFO disclosure might affect world religions and mainstream Spirituality. As a minister I have been called to serve in some very conservative Christian Churches which considered the topic of UFO's to be the stuff of lunatics and demons. When full disclosure occurs, congregations like these are going to have serious problems adjusting to the new paradigm. That's one reason I'd like to see the topic of ExoTheology go mainstream; to help get people ready for what will be an Earth shaking event when it finally happens. :-)
