  • Reflections from the field: "Just built my friend an AMD based Linux gaming system".

He continues: "It runs like a champ. Setting this up was a new experience since I haven't had a gaming PC since I switched to Linux a couple of years ago. I did a lot of gaming in the past on Windows PC's. I was really surprised at how smoothly this new machine plays games.

The hardware is very modest, a Ryzen 5 2400G with 16GB 3200Mhz memory and an NVMe M.2 SSD on an MSI B450M Pro running Manjaro with the 5.2 kernel. I put a modest 3.8GHz / 1300MHz overclock on the processor and integrated graphics. The parts for the entire system were under $500.

In light games like CS:GO it's easy to forget that it's a budget system. Unlike a budget Windows gaming PC it is butter smooth. He doesn't own any AAA games so I haven't had a chance to see those in action. In retrospect I should probably add a user account for myself and install Witcher 3 to see how it goes.

So far so good. Getting my friend's game controller working was the one hangup. It's a cheap thing from Walmart and it makes some games crash. I suggested he buy a used Steam Controller off eBay.

After seeing his new system in action I have no doubt that my next gaming PC will be running Linux. I was already there in my mind, hence convinced my friend to try it, but now I'm downright impressed."
