  • Valve funded development of "Xrdesktop" - lets desktop environments GNOME & KDE work in Virtual Reality.

Xrdesktop is an open-source project that allows for traditional X11 window managers to interact better within a virtual reality space for presenting on VR head-sets. Xrdesktop allows traditional Linux desktops like GNOME and KDE to work on a VR head-set.

The amount of resources Valve is pouring to improve the Linux ecosystem is amazing.

They've hired / are funding / have funded GPU driver developers, DXVK, Proton (Wine) developers (CodeWeavers), Keith Packard to work on direct display extensions, they funded LunarG's work on the Vulkan ecosystem, work on improving KWin +more.

They've ported Steam, all of their games, their VR platform to Linux. They've open-sourced projects to help other game developers develop on Linux (toGL, VOGL).
